BASICALLY FRIENDS ONLY
I love new friends! The more the merrier. However, this journal is for both fandom and personal things, so I don't automatically friend back when someone friends me unless we've interacted in a community previously. Please comment if you're interested so that I know you're friending me.

Things People Sometimes Like to Know Before Friending
» I'm a woman, late-twenties, from the US
» I'm pro-choice, feminist, and otherwise pretty left-wing
» I'm into fitness and being healthy and I talk about this
» I can be sassy, silly, sunny, and sarcastic
» I'm in Harry Potter fandom
I've decided to try something new. I'm making my default new entries public instead of friends-only. We will shortly see how much I regret this. Probably a lot.

Is there actually any benefit to this? I know many of you keep your journals public.

I did eat an ant.
It was a little black one who bit my ankle. It didn't taste like anything. I did squash her first because I didn't want her biting my esophagus on the way down. Maybe it's the larger, plumper ones that have a lemony flavor. Nate says he's eaten ants before and they were spicy. This one wasn't spicy.

TODAY, a dragon.
We were going to go to the Georgetown Flea Market to look for planters for my industrious little tomatoes, but there was a shit ton of traffic on Piney Branch so we went to the National Zoo instead. I'm not actually big on zoos; most that I've seen have been horrifically underfunded, and it's the animals who suffer for it. The Atlanta Zoo is particularly painful to visit. This one is funded by donations and the federal government, so it's doing okay for now. The elephants especially had a nice area, as did the lions. The lady lions didn't even have to share with the one male lion, and I know they were happy with that arrangement. There are wires strung across part of the zoo for the orangutans to go from one area to another; there aren't any cages around the wires. I think that's neat.

It turns out I didn't take any pictures except for one of HCGS next to a Komodo Dragon, and it's on Instagram if you want to see my Khaleesi and a dragon.

May You Grow

gloame: ([food] blood oranges)
I was thinking that if ~1 in 50 people are psychopaths does that mean we are evolving to be less emotional? Are we the proto emotionless aliens who invade Earth in sci-fi novels? Or are we evolving to be more emotional? Or am I reading too much into this? PS this was one of those thoughts I had as I was falling asleep and sounded way more profound at the time than it does now.

May Life Warp Goals

  • Sleep Well, Sleep Enough. This one is stolen from blithelybonny and desperately needed. While I was in Baltimore, I think I got the best sleep I've had in 5 years. I went to sleep around 11:45 and woke up without an alarm at 7:15. This is outstanding. I felt so refreshed all day while I was away. Even my earache and the tension in my neck and shoulders went away. Then I came home and I feel just as crummy as before. I don't really know what the factors are. I think the cats are one (noise, movement, fur) and I think my basement apartment is another (no morning light in my bedroom, unlike the hotel, where it was bright and sunny). But it did tell me one thing: 7.5 hours is my ~ideal sleep~ time. Now I just have to work on sleeping well at home.

  • Fiction, goddamnit. I had a lot on my plate last month, and as life is life, this month will not be so different. I tried to knock the ~easy~ tasks out of the way first, which left most of my writing to the beginning and ending of April, so I didn't have time to finish what I started. I did at least use the time mentally productively, in that I've thought about my writing a lot in the last month. I know what I want to focus on right now, and that helps. This month, I want to focus on my Draco/Hermione and my NewOrleansOrigific.

HCGS, DC, & Long-Distance > Short-Distance
Nathan is graduating with his M.S. in Print Media on May 23. He defends his thesis on May 15. I am so proud of him for getting his shit done. On top of that, he's wrangled a ~trial period~ at that start-up 3D printer outside of DC for the month of May--which means he has to be in DC Mon-Wed and in Rochester on Thursday to T.A. his advisor's class lab. It's going to be a busy month for him, but it's only a month. And since he doesn't have to T.A. next Thursday (see below), he's staying through, and won't have to travel back next Wednesday night. They're only paying him intern wages to do this, which sucks, and if they keep him on, the position tops out at $56,000, which also sucks, but as I told him, any job is better than no job, and he still has applications in with the Fed/Bureau of Printing and Engraving.

He also has an interview next Thursday with another printer in the District. Hopefully that would pay more. Hopefully he will have two great offers to choose from.

So on one hand, I'm really pleased that my long distance relationship is coming to a close. On the other, I'm getting pre-annoyed that I'm going to have to share my living space for most of May.

**Make room to grow**
I also want to take this opportunity to ~spring clean~ my relationships. I know that I've been a not-great LJ friend in the past year, and I would like to change that, but a 150 person friendslist (and a lot of side projects) makes that difficult and I've been, frankly, overwhelmed by a lot of posts on my feed - some from people I interact with regularly, and some from those I only spoke to once, at friending - and plenty in between. I want to focus on the relationships that matter, with the people who genuinely want to be my friend and have me in their life, in whatever way LJ allows for it.

So I would like to take this opportunity to offer any of you who've been "holding on" because it would be "weird" to defriend me, the opportunity to defriend with no hard feelings. I would love a note to say goodbye (and we can connect in other places like Facebook or Instagram or Goodreads if you still want to stay in touch but are tired of my entries) but it's not necessary. You can make a quiet exit if you like.

I plan to stay in fandom and I plan to continue posting about my life in general, if that helps you decide.

* I don't have immediate plans to do a friends-cut myself, mostly because I don't have the time to go through it right now, but if in the future I do so, you can also feel free to let me know here or privately if you'd really like to stay in that event. No need to comment to stay though; I have no intention of ever cutting people I interact with.
Title: REVOLVEVLOVER (original post at [livejournal.com profile] hd_fan_fair: here)
Rating: NC-17
Career Choices: Harry - Hit Wizard; Draco - Anti-Government Extremist
Warnings: Violence and other dark themes, excessive use of the word "fuck"
Summary: The work Harry does is justifiable. It’s justice. He works for his country, and his country is a republic—the magical side, anyway. It’s not laudable work, it’s not work he’s proud of, but it’s necessary work. Harry has always taken the necessary jobs that no one else has the stomach for. It's just that he's never deciphered a kill sheet and seen Draco Malfoy's name on it.
Wordcount: 46k
Author's Notes: This work is inspired by Zero at the Bone by Jane Seville. Some of the situations as well as a few lines of dialogue and descriptions come from there. A great big THANK YOU goes to [livejournal.com profile] sophie_french for the beta.

I'm not sure how we intended to pronounce this title. I call it Revolver in my head.

This was co-written with the inestimable, incomparable, and incapable of doing anything wrong: [livejournal.com profile] firethesound. She already made a claiming post here, but for completeness's sake, I am as well.

I love this fic, and I loved writing it with FTS. It was a really, ah, unusual prompt, but I really wanted to see if it could be done while still keeping the characters themselves at their core, and FTS was willing to indulge me, so thank you to her. :) Her Draco is really unmatched, imo.

I also want to say thank you to [livejournal.com profile] sophie_french for being such a great cheerleader and beta for us with this! She really went above and beyond and she caught so many of my weird fuck-ups and typos!
It's that time again. [livejournal.com profile] harrydracompreg did the big reveal on Sunday and so we all know that I'm the one responsible for the fact that Harry and Draco may or may not have named their daughters Lucissa and Lily James. For which I do not apologize.

This is the post where you are free to give me constructive criticism on this story and/or my writing in general, and it will be welcomed.

Title: You First, Loser (fest page) or on AO3
Word Count/Art Medium: 6,300
Rating: Hard R
Contains: Bad bets, good Malfoys, new parent panicking, and Harry’s permanent hard-on for Draco
Notes: Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] firethesound for the last minute beta! <3
Summary: When Harry and Draco’s “not serious” three-year relationship results in a one-in-a-million pregnancy, they decide who will be the unlucky one to tell their families in a very mature and adult way that indubitably proves their stellar parenting abilities: with a bet over a (probably rigged, let’s be real; Draco is playing) game of Exploding Snap.
Fic-claiming time. This is also the ~safe space to leave concrit~ post if you would like to do so.

Title: Last City
Author: [livejournal.com profile] zeitgeistic
Prompt: # 80
Summary: Twenty-four Twenty-three men, six cities, and one unusual sexual requirement.
Rating: NC-17
Warning(s): None
Word Count: 27,500
Author's Notes: [livejournal.com profile] golden_snitch12 asked for Harry on a wizarding version of The Bachelor with Draco as one of the contestants. Well. That’s what this is. Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] eidheann_writes for the amazing beta job and to [livejournal.com profile] sophie_french and [livejournal.com profile] kedavranox for the pre-reading and cheerleading, without which, this fic would never have happened. Originally posted at [livejournal.com profile] dracotops_harry fest, HERE.

Background research done for this fic:
- Watched Series 2 of UK The Bachelor (Spencer Matthews edition).
- Googled “gayest cities in the world”

Other Searches, for interest, lol:
Sydney: Uluru, “Coral reef weird fish”, map of Opera House, "furry Uluru caterpillar", fauna of great barrier reef
Mykonos: Delos, pictures, “Large penis art”, map of Delos, octopus drying
Barcelona: name of that cathedral, gay things to do in Barcelona, bath houses
Rio: Carneval, Copacabana, Portuguese paving, map of Rio, baneiros, most popular alcoholic drink in Rio
New York City: popular gay clubs, the Monster, price of drinks
San Fran: map of Golden Gate Bridge, Castro District, foods originating in San Francisco, Antique Vibrator museum and vibrators in general
My birthday is in fact in December, but no one would be able to tell with all these DTH fics. I swear to god, I may die.

Two of my prompts have been filled and I am basically astounded that neither of them turned out to be crack!fic (given the prompts) but instead turned out to be completely in-character, amazing, sizzling as holy fuck, delicious fics. MAs, wherever you are, I bow down to your ethereal talent. Someone give these authors an award, for Merlin's sake.

Title: Potter’s Parselprostate (and the Chamber of Secrets)
Author: Anonymous
Prompt: # 29
Summary: Hogwarts’ future depends on Malfoy’s texts. Too bad the key is up Potter’s arse.
Rating: NC-17
Warning(s): (highlight for details): *mild dubcon – Harry is pressured to have sex to help Hogwarts/Hermione.*
Word Count: 17,437
Author's Notes: zeitgeistic, your special request made me cackle with glee and your premise was so promising and, while I didn’t quite mean to write 17k of parselsmut, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Hope you enjoy the result! disapparater, my beta and britpicker, your patience and generosity are astounding, and I’m so grateful for your insight and support. Thank you for all you do. Thanks also to the mods for being flexible, patient, and remarkably supportive and encouraging about the prospect of this much parselporn. Y’all are awesome.

This fic was so amazing! Sizzling hot and I adored how Draco was so right-down-to-business about it all. And Harry! He didn't want to love it, but he did. >:3

And:

Title: let me see you stripped (down to the bone)
Author: anon
Prompt: # 23
Summary:

"So," Malfoy said. "Are you in? Or are you out?" He turned and looked at Harry squarely.

Harry remembered the slow way Malfoy had slid his hand down his own stomach, into his pants – the outline of his long fingers gripping and stroking his own cock. The way his head had fallen back, exposing his pale throat. How he had owned them all.

He took a deep breath. "I'm in," he said.

Rating: NC-17
Pairing(s): Draco/Harry, (Hermione/Ron, Millicent/Luna)
Warning(s): stripping, exhibitionism, some alcohol consumption, and yeah I gave in and did my first leather trousers!Draco
Word Count: ~24,000
Author's Notes: I have to thank my utterly amazing beta, sdkshelly. I mean, beta, crit, cheering, crying, squeeing… This wouldn't be near as good without her. <3 Also, elrhiarhodan kicked my fic ass in the most awesome way! I'm so very grateful for her notes and support! zeitgeistic, I fell hard for this prompt. I hope I've done it justice. Thank you for the awesome idea! The title is from the Depeche Mode song, "Stripped", that I've been listening to obsessively.

This fic has ruined me for sexual tension. Forever.

Okay look, I know this is the 4th time I've posted today and if we were on Facebook, you would've quietly unfriended me by now to spare your feed, but this just posted so I want to share because we have been waiting WEEKS to share.

[livejournal.com profile] mab and I (all my posts are about her lately) have been collaborating on a fic + podfic for Pod Together [livejournal.com profile] pt_lightning. They finally posted today, so here is ours! I wrote the fic, [livejournal.com profile] mab read it, and it has a pretty cover. Click the cover to go to AO3 for reading + streaming.

About 12 years ago, when [livejournal.com profile] birdsofshore did her Character Love Fest, I told her I would draw a Hedwig art for it. But then my Photoshop CC expired like the day of, and I wasn't able to do it. :( I finally did it. So this Harry/Hedwig is for you, birds. :)

My [livejournal.com profile] do_me_veela fic posted this morning. :D

I was inspired by [livejournal.com profile] firethesound's constructive criticism post that she did at the end of All Our Secrets Laid Bare. I know fests are special and not really the place for less-than-positive feedback about fics, but I'd like to know if there are areas where I can improve for the next fic.

So, if you read this fic and had any con-crit-y thoughts, this post is open for you, and I will not feel sassy or upset with anyone who offers such. Don't feel bad about it—you'd be doing me a favour.

And if you didn't read the fic or don't care etc., then feel free to skip right over this post. :3

Title: Haute Allure @ do-me-veela

On Writing!

Jan. 23rd, 2014 02:16 pm
gloame: ([default] december zeitgeistic)
Finished my [livejournal.com profile] do_me_veela fic and came in at 12k which is AMAZING for me. The only thing that saved this from turning into 50k of me fucking around is the fact that it has absolutely zero plot.

Okay let's talk about fic/fiction writing strategy

I've gotten 4 inquiries on my writing process for Azoth now, which is just mind-blowing to me since I never felt like I did anything special writing-wise, but I know this is a question I've often had of other writers, too, so maybe it would be fun to talk about what we all do when we're planning a fic. We can compare/contrast, share tips and tricks, or maybe just bitch about the process.

I'll get us started. Feel free to share this post around to other writers. I'd loooove to hear what you guys do when you're planning a fic (or when you're writing if you don't pre-plan).

I support making your comments all about *you* so I don't feel like a douche for talking about this in my journal. :D

THINGS I DO. Could be spoilers here. Actually, there are.

  1. I always start with a title—even if the title later changes. Often I'll have a title in my head just sitting around for weeks or months, waiting for a fic (or original novel) to be written about it. This has been the case with Every Single Thing I've Ever Written Even Poetry. Last year, I really wanted a fic called "Manticoria," and it took me weeks to figure out what "manticoria" actually was (it turned out to be a potion—a topic I seem to be fond of). This year, I wanted a fic called "Inner Alchemy," so I wrote an entire fic about the inner alchemy inherent in life changes and then angsted to [livejournal.com profile] eidheann_writes about changing it to "Azoth" all of 10 minutes before I submitted it to the mods.

  2. I always know what's going to happen in the end—even if it later changes. I never start writing unless I know where the story's going. I might not know what's happening in the middle (often don't), but I know what the ~big revelation~ will be. I write towards this scene. Everything that goes into the beginning and middle of the story is there to get me closer to that ending scene. With Azoth (since people are asking), I knew that the big revelation would be when Harry saw the boggart again and realized that he wasn't truly happy without Draco, he just couldn't know what he was missing until he had it.

Things I didn't know: How the alchemy would work; that there would even BE alchemy; that there would be five fucking cats plus Hermione and McGonagall; whether or not
Harry would apprentice under Snape or a foreign master; what Draco would study; which side characters would be present; why Terry Boot was there; whether or not Harry would recognize what Ron really means to him; other things.

  3. I look for ways to make every character complex, flawed, and meaningful. This is a cheap trick. I just add props and I pretend they're character development. I give Harry a cat that looks like him because he misses Hedwig and the cat vaguely represent how he feels inadequate post-war. I make Hermione and Draco struggle with something that comes easily to Harry. I make other characters laugh at their screw-ups. I put Terry Boot in to reflect how jaded Harry feels and to show that he's not really unhappy, he just doesn't know what he wants or needs. I also tend to make Harry an unreliable narrator when it comes to Ron, just because bromance isn't always perfect...even if it's perfect.

  4. I research the most mundane shit. Like which art movements Snape will look best in; what color sulfur turns when it heats up; the layout of Diagon Alley in canon; types of magic used in other fandoms; how the fuck chemistry works; major cities between London and Brisbane; CPR; everything I could possibly find on ancient alchemy; philosophies on balance; how fantasy football works; other things.

  5. I never write a scene if it doesn't move the plot or characterization forward. Let's be real: I have enough trouble as it is keeping things short. I don't waste page space writing things that I don't think are necessary. Or sometimes, I'll write entire scenes that I later realize are pointless, and even though it pains me, I'll snip that shit right out.

How about you guys? What are your writing tips and tricks?
Confessions
- It's 6pm and I'm drinking from two different cups of coffee. Both are cold.
- I may be in love with Gary Clark Jr.
- I haven't been running in weeks.

Good vs Bad Smut
What is the line that divides good smut from bad smut? What makes it ridiculous? Weird anatomy is always a back-buttoner for me, but there are some perfectly fine smut scenes that I just cringe at sometimes and I don't even know why. And there are plenty more that I just scroll through because I'm bored out of my mind. What makes some good and some bad?

Also: What are the best and worst words to use (iyo) when referring to a female character's genitals? I really hate the word "pussy". For smut (and leaving aside issues on use outside of describing a sex organ), I'd rather go with the dreaded c-word but it's such a loaded word that I usually avoid it by not writing het. Anything's better than "unfurled blossom," I suppose.

Bad-Sex Prompting Post
What are the weirdest words, items, scenes, comments, and effects you can put into a smut scene without it descending into crack fic? I'm working on my smut-writing abilities, and I want to try this exercise. So:

Give me weird things to write standalone smut scenes around.

They will probably still end up being crack fic but that's life.
Yay, [livejournal.com profile] hd_erised reveals went up today. I got exactly one author right in the guessing polls, and that is exactly one more than I expected to. It's so much easier to guess artists.

I'm so glad I participated in this fest. It reminded me of everything I love about fandom and fic-writing and made me wonder why I ever stopped at all—it was because I wanted to focus on original fiction, but I think now I can do both. I just really love fandom and I've missed it desperately even while trying to tell myself I didn't. Anyway! Here is the fic I wrote, which, as is normal for me, turned out to be about 38,700 words longer than I intended it to be.

Title: Azoth
Writer: faire_weather (zeitgeistic)
Recipient: isinuyasha
Summary: Now that Harry is back at Hogwarts with Hermione for eighth year, he realises that something’s missing from his life, and it either has to do with Ron, his boggart, Snape, or Malfoy. Furthermore, what, exactly, does it mean when one’s life is defined by the desire to simultaneously impress and annoy a portrait? Harry has no idea; he’s too busy trying not to be in love with Malfoy to care.
Rating: Explicit
Word Count: 88,700 *cringe*
Warnings:
Content/Enticements: 8th year +. Side pairings: Hermione/Millicent; Ron/Lavender. Questionable career choices, fantasy Quidditch, apprenticeships, bromance, Alchemy, Animagi, pining, a snarky portrait, boggarts, and Harry as a hot mess. There is a surplus of cats in this story. It wasn’t planned, but when are cats ever?
Author's Notes: Dear Isinuyasha: You said ‘chemistry’ and I ran with it. I hope you like this take on what I’m sure was meant to be a throwaway comment. Original prompt: here. Thank you one zillion times to the most amazing beta in the entire world, E. I am honestly astounded by how amazing she is. I can’t even put it to words. Thank you also to the mods who gave me an extra four days when I was freaking out about the ending. You guys are awesome! Happy holidays!

AZOTH
Title: Marriage of Inconvenience
Pairing: Harry/Pansy
Rating: R; NWS
Summary: After 10 years of marriage, Mrs Pansy Potter still has to be blackmailed into post-coital cuddling.
Includes: Harry's broken nose, Pansy's pug nose, and teeth. I hate doing teeth.
Notes: This is a remix of a sketch I did in 2007. Yep. They're now older and wiser and Pansy still doesn't like to admit she tolerates cuddles. I used some lace brushes from here for Pansy's bra.

And: Since I like to see all the process work for other artists, I'll post my own in case anyone else is into that as well. It's fun for me to line them up and then scan through them in Picture Viewer, like a slideshow of cray. Poor Pansy. Her neck was broken for so long. Anyway, process screencaps.

Again, just tidying up my harddrive; I don't think I ever posted this. I was thinking about picking up ye olde Wacom tablet again and drawing some Harry/Pansy. I'm in a mood for it. IDK. My Adobe Creative Suite subscription may've run out, lol.

Something for the Kinky Kristmas exchange at daily-deviant (2007). I'm afraid I don't remember whose fic I was illustrating. :(

Mother's Day

gloame: ([nature] landscape)

Happy Mother's Day to the moms on my friends list!

And to all of you who were born at one time, have you calculated what you owe Mom for housing you for nine months and then getting you safely out?

You can figure it out at the American Coalition for Labor Reparations website, and even print out an itemized promissory note to give to Mom.

Join us in standing up for reproductive health and education. Planned Parenthood, the organization that delivers reproductive health care, sex education and information to millions of people worldwide, has come under fire in the U.S. lately, with many politicians on both state and federal level seeking to end funding (and in a few cases succeeding).

During the month of May, you can send a specially designed Planned Parenthood vgift to your friends to help support this cause. (And if you need someone to send it to, [livejournal.com profile] frank is always happy to receive gifts!) There are three variations ($1, $5 and $10) for you to choose from, but they'd all look good on your profile when your friends know that you stand by something so important.

Thank you all for your help in our support for Planned Parenthood. This promotion ends June 1, 2012; LiveJournal is not affiliated with Parent Parenthood. For more information about Planned Parenthood, please visit: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/
